Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) set itself the target in the mid-nineties of reducing journey times on its most important intercity routes.
SBB therefore ordered tilting trains of seven carriages from the consortium of Bombardier Transportation Switzerland (lead management) and Alstom. Bombardier Transportation Switzerland delivered a total of 44 trains in 3 series, the final one at the end of 2004.
Since 2001, Bombardier Transportation Switzerland's intercity tilting trains have been the backbone of two main Swiss rail axes (Geneva-Lausanne-Biel-Delémont-Basel and Biel-Olten/Bern-Zurich).
